FAQs

  • Before beginning to work with your trauma, you and your therapist will work together to establish a safe and supportive environment and set goals for your trauma therapy. Our therapists use various techniques tailored to your needs, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to reprocess traumatic memories and Internal Family Systems. We will also help you learn mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help you manage anxiety and stress.

You will learn to identify and articulate your emotions and develop coping strategies to handle distressing feelings and situations. You will work with your therapist towards integrating the trauma into your life in a way so that it no longer controls your thoughts and behaviors. We hope to help you regain control, build resilience, and lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.

  • The length of time clients spend in trauma therapy can vary widely depending on several factors, including the severity and complexity of the trauma, session frequency and your  goals. In your first few sessions with your therapist, you will collaborate together to create a tailored plan that meets your needs and goals.

  • Trauma is an emotional response to a distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms someone’s ability to cope. It often leaves you feeling helpless and reduces your ability to experience a full range of emotions. Trauma can have significant impacts on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, and what one person experiences as trauma might not be experienced as traumatic to someone else.

There are also different types of trauma, though the impacts of each of these can vary depending on the person. Big "T" Trauma refers to significant and often life-threatening events, such as natural disasters, car crashes, physical or sexual abuse, or sudden loss of a loved one. Little "t" trauma involves less intense, but still distressing, events that tend to be more chronic or cumulative, and can significantly impact an individual's mental health over time. Examples of little “t” trauma include chronic stress, interpersonal conflicts such as divorce or ongoing family disputes), emotional neglect, and repeated failures or disappointments.
