You’re tired of feeling like things will never change.

Does this sound familiar?

“I’m so tired of feeling like I am too much for the people around me.”

“There’s always this voice inside my head telling me things like ‘you’re crazy’ and ‘you’ll never be enough.’”

“I feel so overwhelmed by my emotions sometimes that it throws off my whole day.”

“I feel stuck in life and like I can’t move forward, no matter what I try.”

You’re ready for something to change. Maybe you’ve tried other types of therapy and it feels like you’re stuck, or maybe you’re ready to dive in for the first time and break free from the beliefs that hold you back in life. Either way, you’re desperate to find some relief so that you can finally enjoy the present moment and stop feeling like you’ll never escape the critic that lives in your head.

EMDR therapy can help you find the change you’ve been looking for.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works by using your brain's natural ability to process and integrate traumatic memories and experiences.

It uses something called bilateral stimulation - which is the process of alternately stimulating the left and right sides of your brain - using alternating tapping or eye movements.

By using bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reprocess memories so they can be stored in your brain in a less distressing way and you feel less overwhelmed when you’re reminded of it.

  • Before beginning EMDR therapy, we will review ways you believe your past is impacting your present life, and determine your goals for therapy. We will also help you learn grounding skills to manage any distress that may arise during EMDR sessions.

Then, we’ll work together to identify specific memories, images, beliefs, and sensations that are associated with the distress. These targets are what we’ll focus on during EMDR. As you hold the target memory or image in mind, you will simultaneously engage in bilateral stimulation while being supported by your therapist. This helps you process traumatic memories by stimulating both hemispheres of your brain.

As you experience bilateral stimulation, you may experience a range of thoughts, emotions and sensations related to the target. This process allows you to access and reprocess the traumatic memory in a new way, which often leads to a reduction in distress and the integration of new insights.

Once your distress from the memory you’ve chosen to work on decreases, we’ll help you find positive beliefs to replace the negative beliefs or responses that were associated with the trauma. We’ll also make sure that there are no remaining distressing sensations in your body related to the target memory.

  • EMDR can be helpful in several ways:

Processing Traumatic Memories: EMDR facilitates the processing of traumatic memories and experiences that cause you to feel stuck. By accessing these memories in a safe and controlled therapeutic environment, you can reprocess them in a way that reduces their emotional intensity and distressing impact.

Reframing Negative Beliefs: Traumatic experiences often lead us to develop negative beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. EMDR helps identify and reframe these negative beliefs, replacing them with beliefs that enhance your healing and resilience.

Improving Emotional Regulation: EMDR therapy can help you develop greater emotional regulation skills, as we’ll work on tools to help you tolerate and manage distressing emotions associated with traumatic memories. Through reprocessing these memories, you can learn to experience and express your emotions in healthier ways.

Improving Your Relationships: Trauma leaves an impact on your relationships and communication patterns, which can make it hard to form and maintain healthy connections with others. EMDR can help you heal past wounds, improve self-esteem, and foster a greater sense of trust.

Promoting Personal Growth: By confronting and processing past traumas, you may experience increased self-awareness, self-compassion, and empowerment.

FAQs about EMDR

  • EMDR therapy works by using our brain's natural ability to heal. It helps the brain process distressing memories and experiences in a more adaptive way. Using a structured process of recalling memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, EMDR aims to reduce the emotional intensity and reframe negative beliefs associated with your trauma.

  • EMDR therapy varies depending on your individual needs and the complexity of the trauma you've experienced. Some clients may experience significant improvement in just a few sessions, while others may require more extensive treatment. We will work together to create a plan that’s tailored to your goals and needs. Reach out today to learn more!

  • Just as you would if you were in-person, your therapist will guide you through the EMDR process virtually. There are many ways to do bilateral stimulation virtually, such as using a computer program, tapping your shoulders or knees, and walking.
